Insect identification?

I live in western North Carolina. I saw a small (~1 cm long) black insect today and have no idea what it was. Its most distinctive feature was that it had a flat, somewhat leaf-shaped abdomen which it held straight up- perpendicular to its slender thorax. It also had thick flanges on its back legs. It hid before I could take a picture of it.
